Update. To maintain home security don’t be an easy target. If the door leading to the common area in your apartment or leading into your home has the keyhole at the center of the knob, update for a more modern model. Opt for deadbolt locks with a bolt of at least one inch in length. Knobs with the keyhole in the middle can be easily picked, and in today’s world are as good as a written invitation to would-be intruders.
Replace all door locks for lost keys. Even if you’re 95% sure you saw your keys go flying into the ocean when you were unloading that brand-new sailboat, or disappear down a gutter when you were bent down to tie your shoe, don’t take any chances. Although they may seem lost to you, anyone with a bit more motive or ambition may be able to recover your keys and take advantage of the situation. Home security means being 100% sure unwanted intruders will have to force entry, not walk into a turn-key furniture and electronics free-for-all.
Spare the spare key. Although it’s a nice touch when you’ve left your keys at the office or lost your wallet to have the back-up plan of a hidden spare key, the unfortunate reality is that your clever hiding place is not such a secret the first time anyone sees you retrieve it. Especially in apartments where just about anyone can gain entry into the common areas, it’s a better idea to leave a spare key with a neighbor, nearby friend, or doorman should there be one. A good alternative may be keeping an extra key in your wallet, gym bag, or in any item you have with you on a daily basis that is separate from you actual keychain. adt security
